My DAR here in the US said the 15-year life didnt apply under the experimental airworthiness, it would just depend on the condition extension. Is anyone taking this up with the factory or found other solutions? I note one query from the UK. Not sure where the other is from. Generally the BGA technical committee is accomodating to recommendations from BGA senior inspectors, but dont know how EU initiatives are affecting this. The FAA in the US took up the IS-28B2 life extensions with IAR Brasov, but that glider had a TC. Perhaps this page would be bettered served by a Yahoo group.

My canopy cracked in three places due to extreme cold this winter. The canopy is screwed onto the frame. In talking with a repair shop, he advised that the canopy should be glued with an appropriate adhesive to the frame and the screws removed when cured. Two questions, who supplies replacement canopies and has anyone repaired as above?

Hi, just took possession of new LAK-12, recently refurbished. After initial flights we have some small bugs to work out.

1.) 5mph airspeed error, (Ill work on this one for awhile before I start asking questions.

2.) we have a hummm in the tail when 1/2 to full rudder is used! very annoying. Anyway our current thinking is that mylar taping will fix this. So my question is, does anyone out there reccommend or use mylar taping on LAK-12 ? Also anyone else get this if so how did you correct it ? What about taping wings, do you do both top and bottom or just bottom ?

Any help or opinions appreciated thanks

if you fly @ 250 kmh IAS(indicated airspeed) then your TAS(true airspeed) is above VNE. TAS is ruling when it comes to flutter. Your IAS VNE is about 240 @ 9000 ft and 220 @ 15000 ft.

check your play in the ailerons and elevator and fix it if it is excessive

and take it slow at altitude

I was flying my LAK 12 (SN6229) at VNE (at 9000ft) and experienced a flutter. I have been told that sealing the ailerons will help - and I have a little play in one of the hinges of the right aileron. Has anybody else experienced a flutter at 250km/h? I would have thought that such behaviour would only start at higher speeds.

Not being satisfied with my brakes, I removed the brake mechanism and sent the whole thing to http://vintagebrake.serversmiths.com who specialize in drum brakes for racing motorcycles. I now have enough stopping power to put the nose on the runway, if I wanted to! Theres a pivoting plate near the brake actuating arm that hides the adjustment mechanism. Using a flat blade screwdriver you rotate the knob inside one way to decrease brake shoe drag and the other way to increase it. I keep #6164 at Minden, Nevada.

Hi Chris and all fellow pilots!
As I recall there are few ways to adjust brakes on LAK-12 (and on Blanik for that matter).

There should be a cable adjustment on the wheel fork as well as in the control stick. You may also want to adjust brake pads first.
I remember we were usually checked brakes twice a year for wear and adjustment on Blaniks or every 100 landings.
Blank brakes are quite simple to maintain and adjust. There is a hole on the side of the brake assembly covered with moving slide for brake pads adjustment.
Cable itself is even easier but first, pads should be taken care of. Then using (if I am not mistaken) 12mm and 10 mm wrenches you adjust the free movement of the cable and that is all to it.

Unfortunately I do not have any pictures or schematics to show but you can contact Blanik USA for that information.
    Regards.

I have been flying the LAK 12 in Lithuania for 9 years and it handles like a dream. However these local ships only have single paddle airbrakes. so I land at 95 kph flaps +11 and sideslip. When landing flap is used the ailerons feel like a bowl of syrup and using the second + setting makes the LAK handle much better. When the flight director is working it is quite good but it is not very reliable. In 1999 Imanaged a trip in the LAK 17 with and without the tips. I can realy recomend the 17 super brakes, easy to fly and it scratches in week thermals well. I mutch prefer to fly with the tips as it is so mutch more stable.

My six year old LAK12 is curling up at the edges!!! On the trailing edges of the tailplane and fin to be precise. The gap between the tailplane and the elevator has increased to about 8mm in places, normaly a mm or two. The material of the tailplane trailing edge is very thin and I was wondering if the bending could be caused by paint shrinkage.

The fin / rudder gap is increasing. The fin trailing edge is just starting to rub against the inboard edge of the elevator. I have mylar seals on the fin and because of the curly nature of the fin trailing edge the seals only contact both sides of the rudder in the straight ahead position.

They say a picture is worth a thousand words so if you want to see what Im talking about let me know and Ill mail you a couple of images.

Has anybody else had this problem and can anyone suggest a repair?

Thanks in advance and good luck for Y2K.

We have installed an enclosed tail wheel in both Lak-12 from our club. It makes a big diference on ground control (initial phase of takeoff and final phase of landing). Now, the tendency for crabbing into the wind is much lesser. Also a big advantage when operating from hard rwy: no need for maintenance replacing the skid cap.
    I do recomend this modification.
Our LAK12, competition number C1, was winner of the Spanish Open Class Championship in 1998 and winner of the Portuguese Championship in 1999.

Other than that...ship flys great...best buy for the buck!!..I installed a 2 jet gyro for cloud flying...it works great also.....Have been in the clouds once...with it....handles very well...gained only 3000+ feet in 4 mins....weak CU...this time of the year here in north Florida...should be great this spring...

Comments:
    Hi,
Im Paul Kaye and I have a Lak in England. Here are some notes:
    a) Ive never even considered using the nose hook and wouldnt recommend it! I took a launch in a Slingsby Swallow many years ago which was fitted with a compromise hook (half-way between a nose hook and a CofG hook). The elevator force needed to get even a shallow launch was huge. I suspect that the Laks little elevator simply would not cope with a nose-hook winch launch and youd never get a proper climb out of it.
    b) The winch hook as originally fitted to our Lak simply wouldnt work with Tost rings. All attempts to launch caused the ring to pop out as soon as power was applied at the winch. We decided to install a proper Tost hook which was fitted without too much trouble and which works fine.
    c) We always launch in zero flap and keep the speed to about 55-60 knots. I think that the flight manual lists the max winch speed, although I cant recall it off the top of my head.
    d) Like many other aspects of the Laks handling, winching is actually very straightforward. It rotates easily into a good winch attitude without too much work on the part of the pilot. We regularly get 1500 off the Supacat winch at Cambridge. The only thing to be careful of is a wing drop. I always have my hand near the release, just in case.
    Hope this is helpful,
    Paul Kaye

I saw the LAK-17 at the WGC in sweden 1993. It looked like a really nice aircraft. Then I heard that the prototype had been destroyed and the project had been cancelled. I was really surprised when I heard that a LAK-17 was competing in the EGC - 98. I also heard that it had really respectable performance too. Is it another prototype or has it entered production ? Does anyone know??

Service of the LAK-12 Sailplane after 500 Flight Hours or
5-Year Operation is available from the factory or
I can mail any interested party a copy.
It requires technical personnel to measure
backlash of Control surfaces, backlash of the control stick,
fuselage to wing backlash, fuselage to stabilizer backlash,
surface inspection of the entire ship, inspection of
wing tip glue seams, and about 10 other annual inspection
    level items.
Performing the service bulletin is relatively cheap.
Fixing any problems discovered might be expensive.

Subject: One Man Rigging Fixtures
Name:
Dave Rolley
E-Mail: <drolley@ix.netcom.com>
Date: Tue Mar 31 23:35:55 CST 1998
Comments:
There are several one man rigging fixtures out there. I
use a Cobra fixture with my LAK-12, I have a friend that
uses a Cobra for an ASW-20B. I have helped a gentleman
assemble his Nimbus 3 with Udo Rumpfs fixture (the one
advertised in the classified section of Soaring). Both
types work well. For the large ships, especially those using
the Schemmp Hirth style pin system (3 pins in each root rib),
the assembly really is a two person system because you need
someone to lightly wiggle the wing tip to do the final
seating. But at least no one has to lift the 180 pound root
    on the LAK!

I have found that placing the rigging fixture about half way
between the outboard end of the spoiler and the inboard end
of the aileron gives the correct balance, about 10 or 15
pounds required to lift the spar.

If I had really known how easy one of the fixtures made things,
I would have had one for my 15 meter ship. I wont be without
    one again.

Expect to spend between $800 - $1,000 for on of the fixtures.
Undoubtedly you could build one for less if you have the
    time, equipment, and skill.

Comments:
Ive made a rigging aid which makes rigging the LAK a lot easier. In calm conditions, and on tarmac, I have rigged on my own but it is always easier with one other person to help.

My LAK has 12v electrics and I have fitted 12ah/12v gel cells into the original battery cases, after having removed the nicad wet cells.

For the last few years the LAK has been made with a carbon spar.I think this has cured some of the problems with earlier versions of the wing.

The tailplane is prone to damage during ground loops. If you drop a wing during landing/take off and ground loop check the internal ribs for damage. You are looking for white lines on the brown ribs, indicating cracks, or ribs detaching from the skin. If you have any doubts contact your friendly glider inspector.

My LAK is 85% through the Sportine Aviacija Bulletin No.012.5.Re.001A Service of the LAK-12 Sailplane After 500 Flight Hours or 5 Years Operation with no problems so far.

If you have any questions or want pictures of my rigging aid then mail me, I will be pleased to help.
